Vinestead International Employee Bulletin

Issue #98-01 | January 1998 | For Internal Distribution Only

Hello Team,
Welcome to another edition of the Vinestead International Employee Bulletin, your official source for updates, reminders, and a few friendly words to help guide us through Q2 of FY98. As always, we remain committed to transparency, efficiency, and the continued well-being of all employees.
Let’s dive in.
VNet Disruption Resolved
We’re pleased to announce that the recent disruption in the VNet beta environment has been fully resolved. While the cause of the incident is still under internal review, we can confirm that the threat was neutralized thanks to the decisive leadership of Sita Ghosh, Director of Vinestead Network Operations at Vinestead India. Please join us in extending our sincere gratitude for her efforts.
We understand this event may have caused confusion, concern, or in some cases, disorientation among participating testers. As a reminder, VNet is still in closed beta, and while we strive for a seamless experience, unexpected issues may arise as we continue to push the boundaries of immersive virtual connectivity.
If you were directly affected by the disruption and would like to speak with someone, please contact Employee Wellness Services to schedule a debrief.
Looking forward, we remain confident in the future of VNet and are committed to making it a secure, stable, and transformative platform for all.
In Memoriam: Kenneth Montgomery Barnes (1950 - 1997)
Senior Architect, Guardian Angel Biochip Division
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Kenneth Barnes, Senior Architect in the Guardian Angel Biochip Division. Kenneth had been with Vinestead International for more than two decades, and his loss will be felt across the company.
Kenneth was instrumental in the design and development of the Guardian Angel biochip, a groundbreaking technology that represents a major step forward in real-time personal monitoring, preventative health care, and emergency response. His work—marked by tireless research, a relentless pursuit of precision, and a deep commitment to human safety—will undoubtedly go on to save countless lives around the world.
Though a quiet and private individual, his colleagues widely respected Kenneth for his intellect, focus, and unwavering belief in the importance of his work.
"Ken never sought the spotlight," said one team member. "He just wanted to make something that mattered. And he did."
"He believed technology should serve life, not the other way around," said another coworker. "He brought that belief into every line of code."
Vinestead will be honoring Kenneth’s memory with a formal dedication at the upcoming Quarterly Innovation Summit, where his contributions to the Guardian Angel program will be recognized. A digital remembrance page is available now on the intranet (see: Intranet > Community > Memorials > K. Barnes), where employees may share messages of condolence or memories of working alongside him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kenneth’s family, friends, and colleagues. His work lives on in the technology he helped create, and in the lives it will protect.
Guardian Angel Biochip Update – Full Steam Ahead
Despite recent events, we want to reassure all employees that development of the Guardian Angel biochip remains on track, and the project continues to move forward with full executive support.
The Guardian Angel biochip represents a significant leap in personal wellness and biometric security. Designed to monitor vital signs, detect distress signals, and interface seamlessly with emergency systems, the chip embodies our core mission: to keep people safe, connected, and cared for—no matter where they are.
We recognize that the loss of our colleague Kenneth Barnes, whose work was foundational to the Guardian Angel program, has left an emotional and technical gap. However, the engineering team has reaffirmed its commitment to carrying his vision into the next phase of development. Kenneth believed in a future where lives could be saved in real time, and we remain determined to deliver that future.

Beta Test Open
Participation in the internal beta offers employees a unique opportunity to be part of one of Vinestead’s most transformative technologies—and to help shape the tools that may one day save lives, including your own.
For questions about the chip or the trial, please contact the Biochip Readiness Team via the internal newsgroup “alt.betatests.guardianangel.”
Katie’s Kitten Korner 🐾
Big news from Facilities this week: Little Beauregarde has done it again! Our beloved office mouser welcomed another litter of kittens late Monday evening in the 48th-floor server room in Vinestead West. (Don’t worry—the networking team was able to route around them.)

The kittens are healthy, curious, and already attempting to climb unsecured CAT5 cables. Once they complete their health screenings and litter imprinting, they’ll be ready for temporary fostering by employees. As always, our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team encourages team members to consider adoption before the kittens are enrolled in the Perimeter Security Enrichment Program.
Interested in fostering? Contact Katie Mendoza (Facilities – Floor 12) or visit the Kitten Korner on the intranet for photos, names, and temperament profiles. This batch includes a very adventurous one we've tentatively named SCSI.
And yes, catnip toys are still prohibited inside the secure storage cage. We appreciate your cooperation.
Media and Legal Inquiries – Reminder from Corporate Affairs
We understand there have been a number of questions circulating in recent days regarding our leadership team and certain developments that have appeared in external media outlets. As a reminder, Vinestead International does not comment on ongoing investigations, speculation, or personnel matters.
Effective immediately, all inquiries from journalists, aggregators, law enforcement officials, or independent documentary crews should be directed without exception to legal@vinestead.com. This includes questions related to:
- Executive leadership transitions
- VNet disruption and causes thereof
- The Guardian Angel program
- Any mention of CEO Omar Vigfusson in non-company media
Employees are kindly reminded that unauthorized communication with external parties may constitute a violation of your confidentiality agreement. Even casual or off-the-record remarks can have real consequences for our brand, our projects, and your future here at Vinestead.
If approached, the correct response is:
“I'm not authorized to speak on behalf of Vinestead International. Please contact legal@vinestead.com.”
Let’s all work together to stay focused on what we do best: innovating the future of immersive technology in a safe, responsible, and distraction-free workplace.
Quick Reminders & Housekeeping
As we move into the second quarter of FY98, please take a moment to review the following reminders from Human Capital Resources:
🛫 Time Off Requests
All time off must be submitted at least two weeks in advance using Form HR-22 (green copy only). Remember, time away from work is a privilege, not a right, and should be used responsibly.
Important: Requests for time off during network-wide simulation stress tests will be automatically declined.
🔐 Office Security
- Badge access is non-transferable. Do not share, lend, or decorate your ID badge.
- Do not prop open secured doors, especially in or near data centers, executive floors, or rooms with humming sounds you can’t explain.
- If you see something unusual, please report it to Facilities Security immediately.
♻️ Recycling Matters
Please continue to separate plastics, synthetics, recyclables, and organic matter into their clearly labeled bins.
Reminder: Shredding is not a form of recycling.
🍫 Vending Machine Etiquette
We are aware that the snack machines on Floor 15 are once again distributing “bonus” items with certain selections. While this has been reported to Maintenance, please do not exploit or tamper with the machine. Surveillance footage is reviewed weekly, and repeated abuse of the vending anomaly will result in loss of snacking privileges.
Thank you, as always, for your attention, your professionalism, and your continued dedication to the Vinestead mission. Let’s make this quarter our most productive yet—and remember: excellence is not an act, but a habit!
Oh! And of course—Happy New Year!
May 1998 bring you clarity, composure, and a renewed commitment to workplace accountability.
Warm regards,
Gail M. Kincaid
